Track growth milestones and calculate feeding needs for kittens
Kitten Nutrition & Growth Guide
Kittens need 2-3x more calories than adult cats due to rapid growth. Our calculator tracks weight against expected milestones and calculates precise daily calorie needs (60 kcal per pound body weight) to ensure healthy development from weaning to 1 year.
Kitten Feeding Basics
Feed kitten-specific food until 12 months: Adult food lacks the calories, protein (30-40% minimum), and fat (18-25%) needed for growth. Switching too early stunts development. Free-feeding is safe under 16 weeks (kittens self-regulate), then switch to scheduled meals to prevent obesity.
Growth Milestones by Week
- 8 weeks (2 months): Weaning complete, ready for adoption, start vaccinations. Weight: ~2 lbs (average breed).
- 12 weeks (3 months): Rapid growth phase begins. Increase food 25%. Critical socialization window. Weight: ~3.5 lbs.
- 16 weeks (4 months): Baby teeth fall out, adult teeth emerge. Spay/neuter recommended. Weight: ~5 lbs.
- 24 weeks (6 months): Sexual maturity, 70-80% adult size. Still needs kitten food. Weight: ~8 lbs.
- 52 weeks (1 year): Full adult size. Transition to adult food over 7-10 days. Weight: ~11 lbs (average breed).
Daily Feeding Schedule
Under 16 weeks: Free-feed or 4 meals daily. Kittens won't overeat during rapid growth. 16 weeks to 6 months: 3 scheduled meals. 6-12 months: 2 meals daily. Always provide fresh water (fountain encourages drinking).
When Weight is Concerning
Underweight (below 85% expected): Check for parasites (roundworms, giardia common in kittens). Rule out FIV, FeLV. Increase food 25%. Overweight (above 115% expected): Rare in kittens under 6 months. May indicate early obesity riskāswitch to scheduled meals.
Common Kitten Nutrition Mistakes
- Switching to adult food too early: Causes stunted growth, developmental issues. Wait until 12 months.
- Feeding cow's milk: Causes diarrhea (lactose intolerant). Only water and kitten food.
- Not deworming: 90% of kittens have worms. Deworming at 6, 8, 10, 12 weeks prevents weight loss.
- Free-feeding after 6 months: Sets up obesity. Switch to scheduled meals by 6 months.
